THE BRIEF

Off-grid and System-Independent Solutions for Everyday Life

Unplugged 2018 | 2019

Type: Main Project | HTW Berlin - 3rd Semester
Duration: 20 weeks
Team: Individual project

We are constantly searching for power sources to stay connected to the internet. But what would life be like without electricity, internet, water supply, sewage systems, or access to information and communication?

THE SOLUTION

Enhanced Firefighter Safety

During the initial phase of the project, I conducted a network analysis to identify the networks we rely on in our daily lives. Afterward, I formulated several scenarios and ultimately decided to focus on the scenario of air pollution. Exploring the challenges faced by a persona who had to protect themselves from toxic air, I generated several product ideas. These ideas were categorized through cluster analysis and validated with market research, leading to a redefined project scope.

In the redefined scope, the idea of a pair of gloves for firefighters emerged. Research revealed that firefighters have to carry multiple devices that are cumbersome and heavy but have the potential for integration. As the project aimed to create off-grid and system-independent solutions, I researched various alternative power sources. One avenue of research involved a self-experiment with piezoelectricity, using self-cultivated piezoelectric crystals. While the results were positive, they were not sufficient to generate enough energy.

The redefined scope posed the question, "How can multiple electronic components be integrated into a pair of firefighter gloves?" To begin, I searched for a base glove for my product development. Considering that firefighting gloves must meet specific DIN standards, I chose a pair from the company Seiz. This decision led to initial designs and a contextual analysis. During the analysis, I visited a firefighting site in Pankow and had the opportunity to engage with firefighters on-site. This visit provided crucial insights that informed the final design.

In the next step, I explored electronic components suitable for my product development. I ultimately decided to integrate a 0.1 mm-thin OLED display into the left glove. This display can switch between different functions by combining the thumb and ring finger. Additionally, an additional element was added to the right glove.

THE RESULT

Cutting-Edge Features:
Unveiling the FIRE-FIGHTER Included Glove's Advanced Capabilities

The "FIRE-FIGHTER included" glove features a 0.1 mm-thin OLED display. It can display temperature, thermal imaging, and oxygen pressure. To protect the display, it is hermetically sealed. It also includes an explosion-proof feature (EX-protection) to prevent spark emission. Inspired by "Seiz - Lasertemp," a multifunctional device is attached, equipped with an integrated laser capable of measuring temperatures up to 380°C. It also includes a temperature warning for temperatures above 60°C and a housing made of flame-resistant polycarbonate V0.
